International travelers visiting the popular Mexican state of Quintana Roo must pay a mandatory tourist tax known as VISITAX.

From how it works to what it costs, here's everything you need to know ahead of your next trip to Mexico.

The tourist-friendly state of Quintana Roo includes a plethora of popular destinations, including Cancun, Cozumel, Playa Del Carmen, Riviera Maya, Holbox, Isla Mujeres and Tulum, among others.

"When traveling to the state of Quintana Roo in Mexico, it is now mandatory to pay VISITAX and obtain a QR code as evidence of payment prior to leaving the state," according to the official website.

When Did the Mandatory VISITAX Take Effect

Quintana Roo's tourist tax was first implemented in April 2021, initially creating confusion among travelers due to inconsistent enforcement.

However, recent years have seen officials better organized in enforcing the fee.

Who Is Required to Pay VISITAX?

Any non-Mexican citizens traveling to Quintana Roo are required to pay the fee. "All foreign visitors entering the state are required to pay a fee called VISITAX for the use or exploitation of public real estate within Quintana Roo."

However, the requirement does not apply to those who enter through the state's southern border.

Officials remind travelers that "VISITAX is required irrespective of the mode of exit from the state, and failure to pay constitutes a serious infraction under Article 51-Octies, which may affect your ability to travel freely in the state."

How Much Does VISITAX Cost?

The VISITAX fee is $17.75 USD, $23.45 CAD, €17 or £14 per person.

Travelers can pay online via Visa, Mastercard or Amex and will never be asked to pay with cash.

How Does VISITAX Work?

Travelers will obtain a QR code immediately via email once they've successfully paid their tax. The QR code can then be shown to VISITAX agents available at all terminals inside Cancun International Airport.

"They are clearly recognizable and you must STOP if approached," officials state.

You must pay the tax before you leave the state, but paying in advance will ensure fewer headaches and travelers can pay up to a year ahead of their trip.

What Is the Purpose of VISITAX?

The funds collected through VISITAX are put toward maintaining and improving the region's tourism infrastructure.

"Cancun and the State of Quintana Roo are a world-renowned destination that attracts millions of visitors each year and, as such, requires significant investments to support its growth and ensure a positive experience for all visitors," officials note.

Where Can You Pay for VISITAX?

You can pay this fee on the official VISITAX website by entering your travel details and an approved payment method.
